+ What platforms do you use for your virtual tutoring and coaching sessions?
Our meetings take place via Zoom and Google Docs (at the same time). This combination allows us to interact face-to-face with our students and clients while collaboratively editing shared documents. We’ve found this method works well for writers of all ages—even ones in elementary school!
+ How do you take payment?
You will be charged for our services via invoice or payment link (depending on whether you opt for pay-as-you-go, package purchasing, or a subscription-style retainer). These are sent via email through Square, our primary payment platform.
+ How long does each tutoring, writing coaching, or developmental editing session last?
It's up to you and your designated faculty member! To avoid burnout (and boredom), we generally don’t meet with clients for longer than 2 hours at a time.
+ Are you hiring new faculty?
Once in a while, we are! Please feel free to introduce yourself by sending over a resume and writing sample to brady@gilliamwritersgroup.com.
+ Do you train your coaches/tutors/editors?
We commit to certain shared values as writers and teachers, and solidify those through collaboration and mentorship programs within the company, but all of our faculty join the GWG team with incredible training and work experience already under their belts. Most have graduate degrees in literature, writing or related fields from the country's top MFA and PhD programs; substantial work experience in the publishing industry, media, or education; strong track records of academic or literary publication; or all of the above.
+ Do you offer sessions for 2 or more attendees at once?
The Gilliam Writers Group does offer 2-student and 2-client sessions to those who request it; this can be a great way to save money, as attendees can split the cost. However, we do charge slightly more for 2-person sessions, since planning and facilitating them requires additional work from faculty. Furthermore, our standard tutoring or coaching services are not suitable for groups of more than 2; to learn about the small-group services we do offer, please visit our Writing Rooms or Writing Classes & Workshops page.
+ Do you accept clients who speak no / very little English?
In order to benefit from our services, GWG clients should speak English proficiently. However, perfect fluency is not necessary or expected for clients speaking English as an other language.
+ Say I’m certain I want to schedule, say, 4 or 8 hours of tutoring over the next one or two months. Can I pay in advance for a certain number of sessions?
Yes. We offer discounted packages of 4 and 8 hours to clients and students willing to pay in advance for multiple sessions at a time.
+ Are you booking new clients?
Yes! To get started, please schedule a free 15-minute consultation with one of our Enrollment Managers directly on our online calendar. We conduct these intake calls via Zoom or over the phone.
+ Do you offer ghostwriting services?
In certain cases, yes, but only for full-length books, novels, or scripts (screen or stage). Please schedule a consultation call with one of our enrollment managers to discuss your proposed book project.
+ I'm a student. Will you write my essay / research paper / school project for me?
No, we can't help students cheat in school. We want to help you learn!
+ Would you refer me to a previous or current client so that I can ask them about their experience with the Gilliam Writers Group?
We’d be happy to! Feel free to ask, and we’ll connect you. You can also find client ratings and reviews on both our Google Maps profile and our Testimonials page.
+ Brady - why did you start out as a private tutor and not a teacher?
Our school system often encourages teachers to rely on external incentives to drive student performance, and I’m more passionate about the inside-out approach to education: inspiring students to love English for its own sake, for its potential to enrich their lives, and letting the results follow from there.
