More than an instructor…

Our online writing coaches advise creative writers, academic writers, and business writers. We differ from tutors in that our goals are more broadly focused on the client as a whole person — as an artist, an intellectual, and, in cases where the client receives payment for their writing, a professional. Coaches collaborate with writers and authors. We are creative partners, not simply teachers. For this reason, a writing coach should be a practicing writer; our role requires an intimate understanding of the creative process. A writing coach also needs practical knowledge of the publishing industry, preferably gained through work experience in a literary agency or publishing house, or through exposure to industry conventions in an MFA program.

More than an editor…

Writing coaches are different from editors in that we focus not only on the manuscript, but on the writer behind the manuscript. We show clients how to become skilled revisers of their own work, so that any other professional editors you might work with in future are presented with the best possible product, right from the start. Relatedly, coaches devote as much attention to a writer’s process of production (the initial creative process) as we do to their process of revision (the secondary editorial process). A writing coach seeks to benefit all aspects of their client’s creative development.

The final difference between editor and coach is that coaches tend not to specialize as minutely as their industry counterparts. That’s because we don’t work in publishing houses, which usually focus on a few key genres. Instead, we cultivate intellectual agility, so that we’re able to apply our expertise to any kind of manuscript.

A uniquely qualified team…

Gilliam Writers Group coaches are highly trained writers and practiced editors. Scroll through our Faculty page and you’ll see graduate degrees in writing and literature from the country’s top MFA and PhD programs, years of experience in the publishing industry, and strong track records of literary publication. Each of our online writing coaches joined us with ample professional teaching experience already under their belts. Many currently teach at the university level, while others teach graduate students. All have worked with adult coaching clients in multiple industries, on a wide variety of writing-related projects.

Writing by our faculty and emeritus faculty appears in top publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times, Bookforum, Artforum, Granta, Longreads, The Southern Review, Tin House, A Public Space, AGNI, Foreign Policy, JSTOR Daily, Vice, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, The Cincinnati Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, American Poetry Review, The Common, Al Jazeera, The New York Review of Books, Electric Lit, The Rumpus, Catapult, Los Angeles Review of Books, Food & Wine, Ploughshares, and more.

We have been published by Simon and Schuster and Penguin Random House, among other presses large and small, and have earned multiple awards and prizes for fiction, poetry, and criticism.

If you’re ready to finish writing that book, blog series, journal article, poetry collection, or short story you’ve been dreaming about, an online writing coach can help. We work in every genre, on every type of document. Please don’t hesitate to reach out; we have answers to all your questions.

GWG offers long-term coaching for clients with extended projects or open-ended goals, as well as structured writing courses online for learners with more specific, time-bound objectives. Except in special cases, our services are virtual; though meeting with a writing coach near you can be rewarding, we’ve found that digital collaboration — and the visual, multi-layered communication it allows — is highly effective for the type of one-on-one writing help we provide.

Our coaching service is best for:

  • Creative writers (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry) seeking long-term editorial direction, creative guidance, and practical support.

  • First-time, intermediate, or experienced novelists hoping to start or finish a book project (we consult with authors of various experience levels on a wide range of goals, including first-timers seeking publication; our novel writing coaches love guiding beginners).

  • Authors of nonfiction — creative or otherwise — interested in our comprehensive book coaching services; we often work with clients seeking a memoir writing coach or private memoir writing course.

  • Professionals and entrepreneurs interested in content production (including lessons on SEO and marketing communications), creative or personal growth, or improving their business writing skills.

  • Career writers in fields like journalism and academia who aim to refine their prose or improve the public-facing appeal of their work; we often partner with professors on contract for “public intellectual” or “pop academia” books.

  • Beginner to advanced writers of any genre seeking either a custom-designed writing course or open-ended writing help online.

  • Anyone seeking a skilled, mindful writing coach!

  • Note that GWG offers online writing coaching services; though you’re welcome to inquire, we cannot guarantee a match with a writing coach near you.

Writing coaching costs from $85 to $200 per hour.
