Rates for Hourly & Meeting-Based Services
for Writers, Creatives, & Professionals
Our dynamic pricing model offers multiple ways to save on writing coaching and editorial interventions for authors, creatives, academics, and professionals. Hourly rates are divided by payment style (pay as you go, packages, or retainers) and rate tier (Foundations, Standard, and “Plus”). There are three basic ways to pay for meeting time with a Gilliam Writers Group faculty member:
payment style 1
Pay as You Go
Many first-time clients want to try out our services before committing to multiple hours up front. Others simply prefer to schedule sparingly, without the obligation to plan ahead month by month. Pay-as-you-go purchasing affords touch-and-go clients the flexibility to dip into—and out of—writing coaching sessions as needed. It’s a great way to start, and remember: you can switch to packages or retainers at any time.
Pay-as-you-go, session-by-session purchasing is the most expensive way to buy. Clients receive an email invoice from Square following each meeting with their coach. Invoices are due within 24 hours of receipt, after which they are charged to your card on file (stored securely with Square).
payment style 2
Package Purchasing
Save by buying in bundles of either 4 or 8 hours at once. Maybe you have a time-bound project, a finite goal, or a set amount of money to spend. Maybe you want to work with your writing coach for a few weeks or months at a time, taking hiatuses in between. Package purchasing is ideal for these situations, and you can always buy another bundle or switch to a monthly retainer if you decide to continue on.
We bill for packages similarly to how we bill for pay-as-you-go purchases. Just tell your coach you'd like to buy a package of 4 or 8 hours, and they'll send you an electronic invoice via Square. Payment is required in advance; it is not possible to pay for your coaching package in installments.
payment style 3
Monthly Retainer
Opt into a retainer-style subscription plan entitling you to either 2 or 4 hours of meeting time with your writing coach every month, according to your preference. Most retainer clients distribute these hours as weekly sessions (for 4-hour/month subscribers) or bi-weekly sessions (for 2-hour/month subscribers). Retainers are the most cost-effective way to work with your Gilliam Writers Group faculty member.
We'll send you a link to sign up through Square, our payment platform. After that, your subscription will renew automatically every 30 days on an ongoing basis. Though retainers are non-refundable month by month, you can log onto Square any time to pause, de-activate, or resume your plan.

Rates for Manuscript & Developmental Editing Services
for Writers, Creatives, & Professionals
For the most part, our faculty bill for edits on a per-word basis, using a 3-tiered pricing model that reflects the level of intervention your document requires. The appropriate tier is determined by your editor during a preliminary assessment of your work. This ensures they can inform you of the total cost of edits in advance, and confirm your approval before moving forward with the service.
In some cases, however, your Gilliam editor may prefer to bill by the hour (rather than per word). If you approve this alternative, then your editing fees will follow our standard rate model for hourly services.
editing — tier 1
10¢/word
or hourly
Tier 1 editing is for documents that are well-crafted and need only light intervention. It focuses on fine-tuning, and requires a relatively limited time commitment from the editor. This tier is ideal for polished drafts that need a final review.
editing — tier 2
15¢/word
or hourly
Tier 2 editing is for projects that require moderate intervention. This includes refining content, addressing clarity and coherence issues, and making significant stylistic improvements. Perfect for drafts that need more in-depth attention.
editing — tier 3
20¢/word
or hourly
Reserved for projects requiring extensive intervention, Tier 3 editing involves heavy rewriting, reorganization, or even elements of ghostwriting. This tier is suited for manuscripts that need a significant overhaul to reach their full potential.
Our Pricing Philosophy
We offer a variety of pricing options for our services, allowing you to choose the payment style that best suits your needs. In essence, the more sessions you book, the less expensive the rate. We have structured our pricing this way for several reasons.
Incentivizing for Clients
All writers – all creatives – know that the only way to get better at your craft is to practice. Write daily, read everything, and work with other writers to see where your strengths lie and where improvements could be made. At Gilliam Writers Group, our years of experience supporting authors and professionals have taught us that, whatever your writing goals may be, substantive, impactful learning takes time.
That’s one reason why GWG incentivizes private coaching sessions that occur on a regular, pre-determined schedule. It’s simply what’s best for our clients.
Incentivizing for Faculty
But meeting regularly is also what’s best for our faculty. Our firm prides itself on offering the highest-quality online and in-person writing coaching services in the field. To ensure we are able do so, we hire top-tier coaches, and pay them what their experience and credentials deserve. This approach creates effective working conditions in an industry riddled with unfair labor practices, guaranteeing an income that allows Gilliam faculty to invest serious time and energy into driving growth for our clients.
Coaches at GWG also benefit in another way from building long-term, consistent client relationships: our dynamic compensation model means that the longer they work with a given client, the higher the percentage of your fee they take home at the end of the day.
Ultimately, our faculty and clients both benefit more from regular than irregular writing coaching sessions, and our pricing structure works to promote this.
